About Rim Trail South

A popular hike, this is the shorter version of the full Rim Trail, offering incredible views of Snowmass Village and the surrounding mountains and valleys. You’ll make your ascent to the overlook known locally as “the yin-yang” via a steady climb that switches back and forth across the slope. One you reach the scenic overlook at Spiral Point, take in the 360 degree view of the valleys, reservoir below and peaks above. Once you’ve had your fill of magnificent scenery you can choose to turn back (the most popular option) or continue on through aspen groves and along the very scenic Rim Trail ridgeline until the trail ends at the pavement at the top of Sinclair Road. From there, you can either opt to continue your hike to Rim Trail North or you can make your way back to the trailhead by walking down Sinclair Road to Martingale Lane where you’ll hang a right and take the paved Melton Ranch Trail back towards the Snowmass Center.

While this trail can be hiked in either direction, the recommended direction of travel is clockwise.

Insider Scoop: The vast majority of hikers choose to hike this section of the Rim Trail as an out-and-back with the most popular turnaround point being “the yin-yang”

Ever wondered the origin of the Yin-Yang? Check out Aspen Sojourner’s article on its origin here.

Parking

Free parking is available at the trailhead on Divide Road. If you choose to park there, it’s highly recommended that you hike this as an out and back rather than a loop. Alternatively, free parking is also available in the numbered parking lots near the Snowmass Mall. If you choose to access Rim Trail South via the Snowmass Mall, you’ll start at the trailhead for the Nature Trail in parking lot #7. Walk along the beautiful Nature Trail until you see the South Rim Connector Trail on your right. Take it, it merges with Rim Trail South.
